A lifetime of "first"

We may all live to be a 100 years old now, or at least in our 70’s under the new healthcare plan. Anyway......throughout our lives, there are mile-stones or moments, that define us. One of those collective moments are classified as “Firsts”.  We may all share these firsts, but they are still very unique to each of us. These moments are so clear and defined in our minds, that we relive them often and sometimes with great emotional clarity.

Youth..........
From my youth I am impacted with memories like my; First pube….First wallet....First key chain....First shave....First prom....First slow dance....First love....First lover....First heartbreak….First fight....First time behind the wheel....First man to man talk with Dad.

Manhood.........
First legal drink in a bar....First car...First bill...First job not bagging groceries....First time fired....First real friends....First real enemies....First blind date....First lesson about blind dates….First sense of superiority around women....First indications that I’m an idiot around women....First day of boot camp….First time in combat....First time seeing death....First time scared shitless....First time knowing real physical pain....First proposal of marriage....First mortgage....First child....First time I hear "Daddy"....First blog.

Middle age........
First doubts....First affair....First divorce....First depression....First diet….First life failure....First repo....First bankruptcy....First time I hear "Grand Dad"....First cancer....First heart attack....First loss of a parent.

Retirement.......
After the montage of lifelong firsts, you come to the final chapter of your life, and here the firsts are now exchanged for the finals….Final wife….Final grand kid....Final paycheck....Final house....Final golf clubs....Final time I cut the grass....Final TV....Final wardrobe....Final colonoscopy....and....Finally content.

I don’t have nearly as many firsts in my life as you’ve had, and I’m older than you. I don’t know whether that’s good or bad!

I had to keep starting over all the time.

Yeah, that’ll do it, I guess. I just kept slogging along. Not nearly as exciting!

You forgot your first Radio Flyer red wagon, and your Buck Rodgers secret decoder ring when you were only 15 yrs old.

Life is…………………just full of it. Firsts, I mean. I remember each and every one, for now. There will come, I’m sure, the first time I don’t remember. But, I’m glad I had every one, without them, I wouldn’t be who I am now, and, really, that’s all I have to offer. So, I mourn every first I will miss. There will be those, but, the joy of the rest………..there are no words. Thank you for this.

At our age, it’s mostly the finals we’re experiencing now.

I welcome my first grandchild in a month or so. I never thought that would be such a………..joyous first. I hope I get to see the last one, but………………odds are I won’t because of the timing of other "firsts’, so………………….it is the “final” things. As long as I leave behind the memory of joy at firsts for those I leave behind, guess I’m good with that. If not, there isn’t a damn thing I can do about it. I loved the living, if not always the life.
